In summary to plagiarise off the internet

"Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not use or produce insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas, and is necessary for the absorption of sugar. This sugar, commonly called glucose, is your body's main source of fuel." High levels of glucose in the blood damages the body's organs (like heart, eyes & kidneys) in the long term and in the short term a high level makes you feel pretty rough.

For me I have Type 1 which is when the immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin. Unfortunately for me they also attacked the cells that produce Thyroxine which kind of puts the zip in to your day.. so in addition to the injections I pop a pill a day to replace this.

For this event the fundraising goes to JDRF - a charity which funds research in Type 1 diabetes. My father has diabetes and it would be kind of nice for my kids not to be faced with this lifestyle. Perhaps just perhaps the research they do will help them reach their admirable goal of curing diabetes.
